DC-DC converters are used to drop DC pack voltage down to around 12V to run the ancillaries circuits such as lights and wipers etc on an EV. In some respects they are similar to a transformer which drops AC voltage. The DC-DC converter can be used in place of a 12V battery, in parallel or sometimes in series depending on the application.
